Codependency

“Co” means ‘with’ as in co-conspirator. In our program the term codependent describes a person who is a “co-conspirator” with another dependent person. However, the codependent is addicted to fixing or rescuing the errors of the other person/people in their lives. A typical example would be a person who lives with and tolerates someone who abuses substances. The codependent enjoys the emotional high (or relief) they feel from rescuing someone else from “disaster.” The codependent is meeting their own needs and is not helping the other person at all. (see also “rescuing,” (link) “enabling” (link))
